QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
DOT SAP frequently asked questions
Plain-language answers to common questions about evaluations, costs, testing, and the return-to-duty process.
Frequently asked questions
What is a DOT SAP?
A qualified Substance Abuse Professional evaluates a DOT-regulated employee after a drug or alcohol program violation, recommends education and/or treatment, conducts a follow-up evaluation, and develops a follow-up-testing plan.
Can my evaluation be online?
DOT permits an appropriate face-to-face remote evaluation using real-time two-way audio and video. The SAP decides whether that method is appropriate for the evaluation.
How long does the process take?
The time varies with the recommendations and completion of education or treatment. A SAP evaluation alone does not complete the return-to-duty process.
Does the $499 include treatment or testing?
No. The fee covers the listed SAP services. Education or treatment, testing, employer or TPA charges, and outside providers are separate.
Who pays for the SAP and testing?
DOT rules do not generally assign payment for SAP evaluation and education or treatment. Employer policy, agreements, benefits, and applicable law may affect responsibility. Ask the relevant parties before incurring costs.
Does the SAP order my return-to-duty test?
The employer directs the return-to-duty test after the SAP determines successful compliance. The SAP does not provide that test.
Can I drive immediately after the SAP follow-up evaluation?
No. The employer must meet the applicable return-to-duty requirements, including a negative return-to-duty test result, before safety-sensitive work resumes.
Does the violation disappear from the Clearinghouse?
No. Completing the process changes eligibility status after required reporting; it does not erase the violation record.
What happens after I return to duty?
The employer carries out the SAP’s unannounced follow-up-testing plan. The minimum is six tests in the first 12 months of safety-sensitive duty; the SAP may require more or extend testing up to 60 months.
What if I had a refusal rather than a positive test?
A DOT refusal can trigger the same SAP and return-to-duty framework. The details of a specific violation should be confirmed from the official notice and employer or program records.
