How the DOT SAP process works
A DOT drug or alcohol violation begins a defined return-to-duty process. The SAP evaluates and recommends a path forward; an employer handles testing and the decision to return an employee to safety-sensitive work.
The steps
Initial SAP evaluation
Meet with the SAP for an independent assessment and receive education and/or treatment recommendations.
Complete recommendations
Participate in the recommended education or treatment and provide documentation.
Follow-up evaluation
The SAP determines whether you have demonstrated successful compliance and prepares the appropriate report and follow-up-testing plan.
Return-to-duty testing
If an employer decides to return you to safety-sensitive work, the employer arranges the required return-to-duty test.
Follow-up testing
After return, the employer carries out the SAP’s unannounced follow-up-testing plan.
Important: Completing a SAP follow-up evaluation does not itself authorize a return to safety-sensitive duties. An employer must complete the applicable return-to-duty testing requirements first.
What to expect from an online evaluation
DOT rules allow a qualifying face-to-face remote evaluation using real-time, two-way audio and video. The SAP determines whether a remote evaluation is appropriate. You will need a private location, reliable connection, and a device with a camera and microphone.
The time needed to finish the overall process depends on the recommendations and how long it takes to complete them. No SAP can promise a specific return-to-duty date.
